Willard Bay is a freshwater reservoir located 12 miles northwest of Ogden on the flood plains of the Great Salt Lake. An earth filled dike and natural shoreline make up the 20-mile enclosures. The dike is officially named the Arthur V. Watkins Dam, for a former U.S. Senator from Utah who was essential in getting the Weber Basin Project passed through congress in 1949. The area had a need for a reservoir to store surplus water from the Ogden and Weber rivers that could later be pumped out and used on farmlands.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie (see related titles in our catalog) in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The six-story curving, walkable wall embraces the public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium. A multi-level reading area along the glass lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. A roof-top garden, accessible by walking the crescent wall or the elevators, offers a 360 degree view of the Salt Lake Valley. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the library and the crescent wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.

The Natural History Museum of Utah opened its doors to the public in the George Thomas Building in 1969. Since then, collections have been transferred from the University's academic departments and grown through research, acquisition, and contributions to number more than 1.5 million objects. The Museum has solidified its position as the State museum of natural history and has developed strong programs of exhibits and education, both on-site and statewide. In November 2011, we opened our new facility, the Rio Tinto Center, with entirely new exhibit galleries, engaging programs for the public and state-of-the-art collections care and research facilities. At this milestone in the Museum's rich history, we acknowledge that we are a work-in-progress.

In 1866, Simon Schneitter discovered a large, curious-looking rock crater on his farm. Upon closer inspection, he realized that warm, soothing mineral was flowing into a pool where people could bathe and relax. Before long, this mineral “hot pot” became a favorite local attraction. Miners from neighboring towns discovered the warm waters of the Homestead Crater, and fell in love with the relaxation they experienced. Of course, soon they also needed a place to eat and sleep after their visit. The Schneitter family eventually opened the Homestead Resort where guests can soak, eat, and spend the night.

The Sprague Branch's high-gabled English Tudor style building has served the Sugar House community for three generations. The building was selected by the American Library Association in 1935 as the "Most Beautiful Branch Library in America." The two-level facility was opened in 1928 and has been renovated several times as use continues to increase. An expansion project to add a new public meeting room and remodel the building was completed in April 2001, which increased the square footage to 13,058. As the Sugar House shopping district sprouted up, the Sprague Branch continues to hold its historical charm and provide community members with outstanding public library services. Free parking is available to the east and south of the building, and free wi-fi access is provided throughout the library.

Soldier Hollow also hosted the cross-country skiing portions of Nordic Combined, and in March of 2002, held the cross-country skiing and biathlon events for the Paralympics.

Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area is owned by the State of Utah and managed by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. It is located in the Blacksmith Fork Canyon, about 15 mi (24 km) east of Hyrum, Utah. Elk are fed here through the winter to prevent them from coming to inhabited areas further down the canyon in search of food. Horse-drawn sleigh rides and a visitor center are offered from mid-December to February.

This beautiful, open space facility was designed to complement the Rose Park neighborhood with sensitivity to its site on the Jordan River Parkway. The Day-Riverside Branch contains meeting space, an outside deck area, and is adjacent to TreeUtah's EcoGarden, a "food forest" where all members of the community can learn about urban farming and organic gardening.

This trail makes two big loops, circling around Currant Creek Reservoir, which sits slightly above Strawberry Reservoir. It offers great riding with a beautiful backdrop of pine trees and quakies. The trail opens depending on the weather. Typically it opens sometime around the first of June and closes as soon as the snow gets too deep - around the beginning of November. Check with the forest rangers for more information on trail access and weather conditions.

The Adventure Park is a series of platforms and “bridges” with varying levels of difficulty. Everyone wears a harness with a special locking lanyard that safeguards you from falling if you slip or let go. Children must be at least 8 years old. There is a weight limit of 270 pounds. Maximum number of participants on the Adventure park is 20.

CenterPoint’s legacy began with the arrival of the first pioneers in the Davis County area and continued through the creation of Ralph Rodger’s Pages Lane Theater founded in 1990 and Davis County Performing Arts Corporation with its inception in 1996. With the success of the small Rodgers Memorial venue and the support of our South Davis County community, a case was made for a regional performing arts center, which resulted in our current home, the Davis Center for the Performing Arts.

The Brigham Young University Museum of Art is a four-story, modern facility of more than 102,000 square feet in size. The museum also contains state-of-the-art design, fabrication, imaging, registration, and storage areas. The Museum Café overlooks a beautiful sculpture garden and reflection pool.

Daybreak is a community in South Jordan, Utah. The community puts on events that are open to the general public throughout the year. In addition, they offer multiple parks with a variety of playgrounds throughout the community. There is also a man-made lake that you can paddle board on and feed the ducks.

Stroll through the 15 themed gardens to enjoy the cascading fountains in the Italian Gardens, visit the newly-opened I Am The Light Of The World sculpture garden, get a bird’s eye view of the gardens from the Vista Garden, feed the fish at Koi View Pier, and discover the Secret Garden. You can even rent golf carts or Segways for another way to “stroll” through the gardens.

Alta has been referred to as a “skier’s mountain” for many reasons. It is known for its scenery, diverse terrain and for the uncanny quality of snow that it receives season after season. Also, Alta does not allow other types of winter recreation other than skiing. It is a watershed, so no mechanized vehicles are allowed. The ski area has decided to be “just for skiers”, so other snow-sliding equipment is not allowed. It is one of three areas in the United States that does not allow snowboarding.

This 20-mile drive winds through rugged alpine canyons of the Wasatch Range offering stupendous views of Mount Timpanogos and other glacier-carved peaks. The route follows Utah Hwy. 92 up American Fork Canyon and then continues through Uinta National Forest into Provo Canyon on U.S. 189. Timpanogos Cave National Monument and Robert Redford's Sundance are located along the route. Along the route, take a short detour to Cascade Springs. This mountain spring is criss-crossed by a 1/4-mile boardwalk, leading out over clear natural pools and cascading terraces filled with fish and aquatic plants.
